A holographic projector comprises an image processing engine (950), a hologram engine (960) and a display engine (970). The image processing engine is arranged to receive a source image (410) for projection. The source image comprises a first colour component (R11, R12, ...) and a second colour component (G11, G12, ...). The image processing engine is further arranged to form a first colour secondary image (420) from the first colour component by nulling alternate pixel values of the first colour component in accordance with a first checkerboard pattern. The image processing engine is further arranged to form a second colour secondary image (430) from the second colour component by nulling alternate pixel values of the second colour component in accordance with a second checkerboard pattern. The first checkerboard pattern is complementary to the second checkerboard pattern. The hologram engine is arranged to determine a first (HR,425), and a second (HG, 435) colour hologram corresponding to the first and second colour secondary images. The display engine is arranged to form a first and a second colour holographic reconstruction from the first and second colour holograms.
