A self-powered portable barrier 5 is located adjacent a road 4 on a worksite with an overhead hazard. The barrier has a gate 7 driven by a motor to either one of a closed position obstructing passage along a road 4 and an open position allowing unobstructed passage. A controller in the barrier controls operation of the motor in response to communications from a communications system. A ground engaging support 9 is deployed spaced up or down the road so that a sensor 8 attached to the ground engaging support can be deployed at a height corresponding to safe passage under the overhead hazard and projecting a beam 12 across the road. If an over height vehicle E approaches the barrier it is detected by the sensor which transits a signal to the barrier 5. The controller responds by moving the gate 7 to the road closed position obstructing the passage of the vehicle until the over height condition is resolved.
