A controller is configured to receive route data from a route-planning module, the route data indicating a suggested navigation route, and to receive vehicle position data from a position module, the vehicle position data indicating the position of a vehicle. The vehicle position and the suggested route are compared and, in the case of a deviation of the vehicle from the suggested route, deviation data indicating the deviation location is stored in a deviation module (see figure 4 for preceding features). The controller subsequently receives the deviation data indicating a historic deviation location on the suggested route at which a historic deviation occurred and determines if the vehicle is approaching the historic deviation location. In the case that the vehicle is approaching the historic deviation location, a navigation module provides the user of the vehicle with enhanced navigational assistance (figure 5). The controller may use a distance-to-deviation threshold to determine whether the vehicle is approaching the historic location, the threshold being adjustable based on expected vehicle speed at the location, the expected speed being based on current speed and/or road type.
