A vehicle safety monitoring device and system for alerting an operator when the door is open or an attempt to open a door of a vehicle whilst said vehicle is moving. The device comprises a control module for receiving a signal from a door sensor in the vehicle to detect the state of a door and a signal from a speed sensor to detect the speed of the vehicle; and then to send an activating signal to a telecommunications unit when the control module detects that the door is in an open state and that the speed of the vehicle is within a specified range. In use, a telecommunications unit sends an alert signal to a remote receiver/operator when the activating signal is received. The device may be used in monitoring waste collection vehicles or heavy goods vehicles and alerting the control centre when someone opens the vehicle door when the vehicle is moving, e.g. when the user is moving in and out to collect household waste etc. The alert may be an email with time and location information of the vehicle at the time when the door was opened. The system may also lock the door if the vehicle is moving and an attempt is made to open the door.
