A safety system for trains travelling on a railway network comprises multiple sub-systems in communication (e.g. relating to train control system 5, route monitor service 3, level crossing and junction controllers 9,11 and hazard management and timetable management services 2,4). It collates, categorizes and publishes information updates concerning a topic received from a sub-system and allows a train travelling on the network to subscribe to published information for a topic. It also receives periodic status updates from the train and publishes this to subscribers. The information updates may be records of trains and hazards currently on a route (provided by the route monitoring sub-system) or of hazard locations and associated permissible speeds (from the hazard monitoring sub-system). Also disclosed is a moving-block control system in which a train (31, Fig.11) travelling in a network transmits to a network information system (20, Fig.11) data concerning train identification, position, speed, direction of travel and status. The network information system monitors (22, 23, Fig.11) routes and hazards within the network and transmits information about relevant routes and hazards to the train.
