A puff engine for drawing puffs through an article or device under test in a smoking or vaping machine is disclosed. The puff engine (22) comprises a cylinder (30), a piston (32) arranged to reciprocate within the cylinder, an inlet port (36), an exhaust port (38), and a valve. The valve comprises a rotatable shaft (40) with a first through-hole (46) for providing an inlet to the cylinder during an inlet stroke of the piston and a second through-hole (48) for providing an outlet from the cylinder during an exhaust stroke of the piston. The shaft is rotatable between a first position where the inlet port is open and the outlet port is closed and a second position where the outlet port is open and the inlet port closed. This may provide fluid paths which are shorter, have a more consistent cross-section, and/or fewer protrusions or recesses. Also claimed is a method of drawing puffs using the puff engine.
