A power system comprising: an electrical power bus; one or more loads 20 electrically coupled to the bus; a fuel cell 10; a battery (fig 3, 34); a first switch (fig 3, 38) coupled between the battery and the bus; which is switchable between a first state and a second state; the first state of the switch 38 where the battery 34 is directly connected to the bus so the battery 34 provides electrical power to the bus; and the second state of the switch 38 where battery 34 is disconnected from the electrical power bus, a capacitor (figure 4, 44) connected to the bus via a second switch, (figure 4, 44) which is switchable between first, second and third states, where in the first state the capacitor is connected to the bus and supply power to the bus, in the second state is disconnected from the bus and in the third state is connected to the bus via a resistor (figure 4, 50) to charge the capacitor.
