A vehicle power-saving mode is controlled to provide efficient energy management in vehicles, such as electric vehicles. If it is determined, via a sensor, that a user is not present within the vehicle, the vehicle is controlled to enter the power-saving mode (e.g. vehicle sleep mode), whereby the power consumption of at least one vehicle component is minimised. The vehicle component may be: an air conditioning unit, a stereo unit, a climate control unit, a GPS unit, a display unit, a lighting unit and/or an auxiliary power unit (APU) such as a range extending engine motor. During the power-saving mode, a warning notification may be transmitted (e.g. via a cloud storage system to a mobile device of the user) when a battery level of the vehicle is lower than a first threshold and an auxiliary power unit may be activated to charge the battery when the battery level is lower than a second threshold. The presence of the user within the vehicle may be determined: when it is detected that the pressure on a driver seat exceeds a predetermined value; or when the vehicle and user are within a predetermined distance of each other, based on location information of the vehicle and the user (e.g. via a mobile tag).
