The device has a respiratory gas analyzer (5) that is arranged within a vehicle and is formed to detect the respiratory alcohol level of an operator, where a control unit (1) is connected to the respiratory gas analyzer and an ignition system of the vehicle. The control unit is formed to compare the detected respiratory alcohol levels with a threshold value. A sensor is provided for detecting the movement of the vehicle and is connected with the control unit. An independent claim is included for a method for preventing the starting of a vehicle.
