    The traction battery (1) has several single cells (3) which are designed as a lithium battery (2), where each single cell has a capacity in the range of 20-70 ampere hours. The lithium battery is Li-ion battery, lithium polymer battery, lithium titanate battery, lithium iron phosphate battery or lithium-air battery. The cells are switched in parallel or series in order to obtain a desired total capacitance value. Each cell module is provided with a monitoring device comprising controller, temperature sensor and/or voltage sensor. An independent claim is included for traction battery system.
