Verifying an ETCS design overlaid on an existing signalling system is described. This involves logging timestamped data on a train and at a trackside train detection system to determine the distance between balises and their location relative to known track section boundaries. If the distances determined using the data logged by both a train and the trackside train detection device match that of the ETCS design, the correctness of the design is considered to be verified. The train may be an ETCS-compliant or a non-ETCS-compliant train.
