The invention relates to a for a pedal vehicle (1), such as a bicycle, the powertrain (10) configured to transfer an input torque at least partially to a wheel hub (3), the input torque to be applied by a user to a pedal crank structure (2), the powertrain (10) comprising:the pedal crank structure (2);a drive device of which a drive (11) is configured to be coupled directly or indirectly to the pedal crank structure (2); anda control device (13) that is configured to control the drive device, whereinthe control device (13) is configured to control an apparent gear ratio within one revolution of the pedal crank structure (2) by driving the drive device as a function of an angular position of the pedal crank structure (2), which apparent gear ratio is effective between the pedal crank structure (2) and the wheel hub (3), and/orthe control device (13) is configured to receive and/or generate chainring shape data which chainring shape data at least partially defines a shape of a non-circular chainring, to process the chainring shape data and to control a cadence at the pedal crank structure (2) periodically based on processed chainring shape data by controlling the drive device.
