A mobile cargo controller (400) for a cargo handling system (100) is provided. The mobile cargo controller includes at least one inertial measurement unit (460) configured to: identify a true forward position of a cargo compartment (14) in which the cargo handling system operates, determine an orientation of the mobile cargo controller, and, using the true forward position of the cargo compartment and the orientation of the mobile cargo controller, identify a frame of reference for the mobile cargo controller within the cargo compartment.
