The invention relates to a method for operating a high-voltage energy storage unit (10) which comprises a main control device (12) and several interconnected battery cells (12) which are connected to the main control device (12) by means of at least one line (16) and at least some of which are connected to a respective cell monitoring apparatus (18) which is, in each case, designed to detect at least one respective cell parameter and to transmit same to the main control device (12), said method comprising the following steps: - detecting the communication between the main control device (12) and the respective cell monitoring apparatus (18); - modulating a load of at least one battery cell (14) if the cell parameter is not transmitted and/or if there is no confirmation following transmission; - detecting the modulation by a voltage measurement of the main control device (12) on the line (16); and - specifying an operating state of the high-voltage energy storage unit (10) depending on the type of modulation. The invention also relates to a high-voltage energy storage unit (10) and to a motor vehicle.
