A hybrid electric propulsion system (100) of an aircraft (10) includes a gas turbine engine (20) configured to generate rotational power, and an electric propulsion system (205a, 205b) configured to generate at least one of thrust or lift for operation of the aircraft (10). The propulsion system includes a propulsor (113)and an electric motor configured to drive the propulsor (113). A controller (200) is in signal communication with the gas turbine engine (20) and the electric propulsion system (205a, 205b). The controller (200) operates the gas turbine engine (20) based on an on-board engine model, monitors electrical parameters of the electric propulsion system (205a, 205b), and updates the on-board engine model in response to changes to the electrical parameters.
