The present invention relates to a method and device for controlling an adaptive cruise control system, referred to as an ACC system, of a first vehicle (10). For this purpose, a first relevance indicator associated with the second vehicle (11) is determined according to a first method based on the detection of a traffic lane (1001) of the first vehicle (10) and on the occupation of this traffic lane (1001) by the second vehicle (11). A second relevance indicator associated with the second vehicle (11) is determined according to a second method based on the path of the first vehicle (10) determined from dynamic parameters of the first vehicle (10) and on the presence of the second vehicle (11) on this path. The second vehicle (11) is selected or deselected as target object of the ACC system according to functions of a combination of the first indicator and of the second indicator.
