The invention relates to, inter alia, a monitoring device (34) for checking the function of a magnetic track brake (10), which comprises at least one magnetic field generation device (12) for generating a magnetic field and which is designed in such a way that it is in contact with a trackside rail (20) during the active braking operation and is raised and separated from the rail (20) in the inactive status. According to the invention, the monitoring device (34) comprises an AC power source (341) for generating an alternating current (Iw) via the magnetic field generation device (12) or at least one alternating current portion in a current flowing through the magnetic field generation device (12) and for generating a magnetic alternating field, and an evaluation device (342) which is designed to form at least one item of measurement data (MA) relating to the magnetic track brake (10) on the basis of measurement results describing the alternating current behaviour of the magnetic field generation device (12).
