There is provided a hybrid energy storage system (200), comprising: a flywheel energy storage device (110) having a flywheel (120), a motor-generator (130) coupled to the flywheel, and a drive circuit (140) arranged to drive the motor-generator; a battery (250) coupled to the drive circuit via a DC link (160); and a controller (280). The controller is operable to increase and decrease an energy flow between the battery and the DC link to a target power level by controlling the drive circuit, based on the target power level, a voltage of the DC link and a state of the battery, to cause the motor-generator to adjust a rotation speed of the flywheel such that the voltage of the DC link is changed to a target DC link voltage that causes the energy flow between the battery and the DC link to be at the target power level.
