An HVAC controller 23 of a vehicle receives carbon dioxide (CO2) data from at least one CO2 sensor 22, e.g. nondispersive infrared (NDIR) CO2 sensor, in a passenger cabin of the vehicle. Based on the data, e.g. comparison with a prescribed CO2 level, the controller determines whether to reduce the level of CO2 in the cabin. The controller transmits a control signal commanding an HVAC system of the vehicle to draw ambient air into the cabin when CO2 level reduction is needed. Ambient air may be drawn in by a blower 16 and/or inlet door mechanism 18 that are ideally adjusted to control the rate ambient air is drawn in based upon a desired rate of CO2 reduction. The level of particulate matter (PM) in the cabin is ideally controlled also whereby, if the ambient air PM level exceeds that in the cabin air, the HVAC system recirculates cabin air through a filter to reduce the PM level in the cabin in preference over drawing in ambient air even where the CO2 level is above the prescribed CO2 level. The controller may be enabled or disabled by a vehicle occupant via a user interface.
