The invention relates to a method and a measuring system (19) for ascertaining the surface quality of a rail head (5) along a laid rail section (1) which is made of rails (2). A measuring car (16) and a measuring unit (14) with at least one first measuring assembly (21) are provided. The first measuring assembly (21) comprises a measuring base (22), a guide assembly (23), and at least one first sensor (24) which can be found on the measuring base (22). The measuring base (22) is movably guided relative to the car chassis (17) by the guide assembly (23) in a normal orientation with respect to a rail plane (13), which is defined by the respective rails (2). Furthermore, the measuring base (22) together with the at least one first sensor (24) is mechanically supported on at least one of the rails (2) by means of a support device (26) while the measuring car (16) is moved along the rails (2) and is thus constantly guided above the rail (2) at a fixed specified distance thereto.
