The invention relates to a method for operating a bicycle, in particular a pedelec, the bicycle comprising at least one component of a bicycle system for operating the bicycle, and at least one definable component of the bicycle being monitored with respect to deactivation. The method comprises the steps: • - checking (S1) whether an initiated deactivation of a component of the bicycle system has to be monitored with respect to the deactivation thereof and, if yes, (S2), • • ascertaining (S3) a current ride state of the bicycle, • • checking (S4) whether deactivation of the component to be deactivated is permissible in the ascertained ride state, and providing a check result, and • • deciding (S5), on the basis of the check result, whether or not the component to be deactivated can be deactivated. • - deactivating (S6) the component to be deactivated if the component can be deactivated and/or if it is not being monitored.
