The invention relates to a method for monitoring the operating mode of an electric asynchronous machine with a variable rotational speed, said asynchronous machine being used for driving and braking purposes in a rail vehicle. The asynchronous machine is supplied with voltage or current by an inverter, wherein the operating mode of the asynchronous machine is set and regulated by setting the phase position of the supplied voltage or current. According to the invention, the sign of the electric slip frequency of the asynchronous machine is ascertained. Furthermore, the sign of the rotational speed of the asynchronous machine is ascertained, and the sign of the slip frequency is compared with the sign of the rotational speed of the asynchronous machine. If the rotational speed and the slip frequency have the same sign, the drive mode is detected. If the rotational speed and the slip frequency have different signs, the braking mode is detected. The sign of a variable which is proportional to the slip frequency is ascertained from the stator currents and the rotational speed of the asynchronous machine.
