A train for travelling on a railway network including routes with external power supply infrastructure and on routes without external power supply infrastructure. The train includes a control system configured to operate a drive system of the train in each of two power modes: a hybrid mode in which power is drawn from an on-board generator assisted by one or more on-board electrical storage systems, and a battery-only mode where power is drawn only from the one or more on-board electrical storage systems. The control system is configured to receive both: a driving setting selection, and an operator specified power mode selected from the two power modes, associated with a respective region of the railway network. Whilst the train is in the respective region the control system is configured: to modify one or more parameters associated with the operator specified power mode, or to change from or ignore the operator specified power mode, based on the driving setting selection.
