The present invention provides a marine propulsion system that is suitable for any civilian and military marine vessels and which offers operational flexibility. The system includes first and second ac busbars (16a, 16b) and a plurality of connected ac generators (G1, G2, ..., G4). A connection (20) is provided between the first and second ac busbars (16a, 16b). A first `active front end' (AFE) power converter (24) is connected to the first ac busbar (16a) and a second AFE power converter (26) is connected to the second ac busbar (16b). A propulsion motor (T1) has ac terminals connected in parallel to the first and second AFE power converters (24, 26). During normal operating conditions of the marine propulsion system, the connector (20) between the first and second ac busbars (16a, 16b) is open so that the first and second ac busbars (16a, 16b) are electrically disconnected. The marine propulsion system is adapted to supply power to the first propulsion motor (T1) from both the first and second ac busbars (16a, 16b) through the first and second AFE power converters (24, 26) at the same time.
