The invention relates to a method for forming an emergency lane (14) for a vehicle (10), wherein the vehicle (10) has at least one surroundings sensor (16, 18, 20) for capturing surroundings (22) of the vehicle (10), comprising the steps of detecting a driving situation on a road (32) comprising a roadway (34) having a plurality of traffic lanes (36) for a direction of travel (38) of the vehicle (10), ascertaining a congestion situation on the road (32), detecting a traffic lane (36) being travelled in by the vehicle (10) from the plurality of traffic lanes (36) for the direction of travel (38) of the vehicle (10), detecting a position of the vehicle (10) with respect to surrounding vehicles (44) and/or one or more boundaries (40, 42) of traffic lanes (36) and/or the roadway (34) based on sensor information provided by the at least one surroundings sensor (16, 18, 20), determining a required change in position of the vehicle (10) in order to form the emergency lane (14) based on the traffic lane (36) being travelled in by the vehicle (10) and the position of the vehicle (10) with respect to surrounding vehicles (44) and/or one or more boundaries (40, 42) of traffic lanes (36) and/or the roadway (34), and outputting the required change in position of the vehicle (10) in order to form the emergency lane (14). The invention furthermore relates to a driver assistance system (12) that is designed to perform the above method.
