Disclosed is a method for controlling the speed of a vehicle in a lane, the method comprising the following steps: - acquiring (E10) at least one first piece of information relating to the lane and optionally at least one second piece of information relating to the external conditions; - determining (E20) a lane width and optionally a length of lane visible to a driver of the vehicle, from said at least one first piece of information; - calculating (E30) a suitable speed for the vehicle depending on the maximum authorised speed in the lane, the determined lane width and depending on the determined length of lane visible and/or the external conditions; - regulating (E40) the vehicle speed as a function of the calculated speed.
