A brake (10, 70, 90) for an aircraft is provided. The brake comprises: a housing (22); a shaft (12) defining an axis (X) and extending into the housing; a floating brake disk (16) on the shaft, the brake disk fixed for rotation with the shaft and arranged to be axially movable within the housing (22); a static brake pad (14) arranged on a first side (16a) of the floating brake disk (16); a movable brake pad (18) arranged on a second, opposite, side (16b) of the floating brake disk (16); biasing means (20) for moving the movable brake pad relative to the housing to press the movable brake pad against the floating brake disk, and thereby to press the floating brake disk against the static brake pad (14) to apply braking force to the floating brake disk; and a thermal fuse (26) in thermal contact with the static brake pad (14). The thermal fuse has a fusing temperature, T, above which the thermal fuse fuses, and the thermal fuse is arranged such that, before it fuses, the static brake pad is axially fixed relative to the housing, and after it fuses, the static brake pad is free to move axially relative to the housing away from the brake disk. A method of operating the brake is also provided.
