The invention relates to a method for synthesising a thermoplastic elastomer comprising at least one polydiene block and at least one poly(α-methylstyrene) block. This method comprises the polymerisation steps comprising, successively: - polymerising the α-methylstyrene in an initial reaction medium comprising an anionic polymerisation initiator and an apolar solvent in the presence of a polar compound, the molar ratio of the polar compound to the metal of the polymerisation initiator being at least 0.03 and at most 15, with a mass ratio of the solvent to the α-methylstyrene of at least 0.5 and at most 5, and at a temperature higher than or equal to 0°C and lower than 30°C; - adding, in a single step, all of the monomer or monomers that are to constitute the polydiene block, the monomer or monomers comprising at least one conjugated diene monomer; - polymerising the monomer or monomers that are to constitute the diene block on the living poly(α-methylstyrene) chains obtained previously, at a temperature higher than or equal to the polymerisation temperature of the α-methylstyrene. The method of the invention makes it possible to synthesise a thermoplastic elastomer of controlled microstructure and controlled macrostructure, the thermoplastic block(s) of which are homopolymers of α-methylstyrene and may have a glass transition temperature higher than the glass transition temperature of polystyrene at 100°C, with a reduced number of steps and productivity that is economically compatible with industrial exploitation.
