The invention concerns a protection circuit (61) to be provided between a charger (2) and a battery (3) to be charged by the charger (2). The protection circuit (61) includes a charging current path (63) from the charger to the battery and a bypass path (34) from the battery to the charger, where a first switch (36) is provided in the charging current path (63) which is controlled by a drive signal (47) from a drive circuit (46). To avoid sparks or arcing the switch (36) is switched ON only if the voltage across the chargers output capacitor at the input terminals (41, 55) is substantially equal to the battery voltage at the output terminals (42, 56). As long as the first switch is OFF and the battery voltage is higher than the capacitor voltage, current may flow from the battery through the bypass path to precharge the chargers output capacitor. In a similar manner, a second switch (37) is provided in series with the first switch (36) and controlled by the same drive signal (47) to avoid high currents flowing from the chargers output capacitor into the battery in case of reverse terminal connections. The drive circuit (46) is activated or deactivated by a control circuit (70) based on the chargers output voltage and the battery voltage.
