An electric machine (100), comprises, a stator (150) including a plurality of electromagnets (120) arranged in a circumferential configuration about a rotational axis (130) of the electric machine (100), each electromagnet (120) having an associated first magnetic conductor (125) and an associated second magnetic conductor (125) radially spaced apart from the first magnetic conductor (125) to define an annular space therebetween; and a rotor (140) including a plurality of permanent magnets (110) arranged about the rotational axis (130) of the electric machine (100), wherein the plurality of permanent magnets (110) are configured to rotate about the rotational axis (130) within the annular space defined between the first and second magnetic conductors (125) of the stator (150) such that, (i) a first air gap (160) is defined between each first magnetic conductor (125) and a first pole of each permanent magnet (110) and a second air gap (160) is defined between each second magnetic conductor (125) and a second pole of each permanent magnet (110), and (ii) during operation of the electric machine (100), an axis of magnetization (200) of each permanent magnet (110) passes through the first and second air gaps (160) and the first and second magnetic conductors (125) and is directed towards the rotational axis (130) of the electric machine (100).
