The invention provides a method for reliably detecting driving on a road shoulder, wherein at least one parameter is detected by means of at least one sensor unit (10,10',11,16) of a motor vehicle (9). A first control value and a second value are determined based on the at least one measuring parameter. The first control value relates to wheel movement. The second control value relates to a vehicle state parameter of the motor vehicle (9). Based on comparison between the first control value and a first limit value and based on comparison between the second control value and a second limit value, a first confidence value and a second confidence value which exist for aiming at driving on the shoulder. A total confidence value is determined based on the first confidence value and the second confidence value.
