A control system (200) for an engine (100) operatively coupled with a propeller (106) and methods for controlling an engine (100) operatively coupled with a propeller (106) are provided. In one example aspect, the control system (200) includes a controller (210) and an electric propeller governor (250). The electric propeller governor (250) includes a motor (262) operatively coupled with a flyweight governor spring (256). The motor (262) is communicatively coupled with the controller (210). The controller (210) is operable to receive data (270) indicative of the speed of the propeller (106), determine if the measured speed exceeds a propeller (106) speed threshold, and if the threshold is exceeded, the controller (210) is configured to change a propeller (106) speed set point. Particularly, the controller (210) can cause the motor (262) to change the preload on the flyweight governor spring (256), which in turn causes adjustment of the propeller (106) speed set point. In this way, propeller (106) speed overshoot is prevented during fast acceleration of the engine (100).
