A control system for a motor vehicle engine transmission unit comprising two drive wheel trains, the two trains being driven independently, the control system operating according to several driving modes which can be selected by the occupant of the vehicle, including an AWD mode in which the four wheels are driven, the control system being able to switch autonomously from the AWD mode to an AWD ECO mode promoting consumption savings when a first predetermined event occurs, the control system being characterised in that it is able to autonomously exit the AWD ECO mode temporarily when a second predetermined event occurs. The invention also relates to a vehicle provided with such a control device.
