A composite structure (1000) including a composite body (1002) having an outer surface (1004), wherein the composite body is elongated along a span axis (As), and a detection layer (1006) connected to the outer surface of the composite body, the detection layer including a plurality of strips (1008), wherein each strip comprises a plurality of glass fibers (1010) embedded in a matrix material (1012), is elongated along a detection axis (AD), the detection axis (AD) being substantially aligned with the span axis (As), and is spaced a non-zero distance (D) apart from adjacent strips such that a discontinuity (1014) is defined between adjacent strips.
