Provided are: a rubber composition, for a tread, that has improved wet grip performance and abrasion resistance; and a pneumatic tire having a tread formed from the rubber composition for a tread. The rubber composition for a tread contains diene-based rubber and aluminum hydroxide having an average particle diameter (D50) of 0.6 to 1.3 µm and containing 10% by mass or greater of particles having a particle diameter not less than 3.0 µm.
