A sprung wheel axle suspension for a vehicle such as a truck, trailer or semi-trailer includes an axle body extending substantially in the transverse direction of the vehicle. Furthermore the suspension includes on each side of the vehicle a bearing bracket associated with a vehicle chassis, an (air)spring supporting the vehicle chassis, and a trailing arm extending substantially in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The trailing arm is secured to the axle body, is pivotally connected with its front end portion to the bearing bracket and further to the rear has a spring mounting portion secured to the spring. The suspension includes a strut assembly to provide transverse support to the bearing brackets. The strut assembly comprises a cross strut extending between the two bearing brackets, and a tensioning means arranged to clamp the cross strut between the bearing brackets. The cross strut comprises at least one cross tube. The tensioning means includes at least one tensioning bolt or rod that is received at least partially in the at least one cross tube and extends through at least a mounting hole in at least one of the bearing brackets to provide an axial pretension in the cross tube.
