A steering column (CD) equips a vehicle and comprises: - a rear part (PR) to which a steering wheel is secured and that is coupled to an intermediate part (PI) that can be moved in translation over a maximum distance relative to a front part (PV) in the event of strong pressure being applied to the steering wheel, and - retraction means (MR) comprising a rack (CR1) securely attached to the intermediate part (PI), a toothed wheel (RD1) mounted on the front part (PV) so as to be able to rotate and meshing with the rack (CR1), and drive means (ME) capable, if rotated over an angular sector by a hand of a user of the vehicle, of rotating the toothed wheel (RD1) in order to move the rack (CR1) and the intermediate part (PI) in translation relative to the front part (PV) over a distance that depends on this angular sector and less than or equal to the maximum distance.
