The invention relates, among other things, to a method for determining the position of a rail vehicle (10) travelling on a rail section (20), wherein, in the method, a radar signal is emitted, a returning radar signal is received, and the location of the rail vehicle (10) is determined by using the radar signals. According to the invention, a ground radar signal (BRS) is emitted in the direction of the ground (22) carrying the rail section (20), which signal penetrates into the ground (22) and, from the interior of the ground – at least to some extent – reaches the rail vehicle (10) as a response signal (AS), the response signal (AS) is evaluated, forming an item of underground information (UI), the underground information (UI) is compared with underground information (UI) previously detected and stored in a location-based manner, a ground-radar-based location indication (O) is determined by using the comparison result, and the position of the rail vehicle (10) on the rail section (20) is determined on the vehicle, in particular also by using the ground-radar-based location indication (O).
