An ancillary system 200 for a vehicle comprises an air compression apparatus 210 and an apparatus 220 providing hydraulic pressure for power steering. The system is packaged as a unit, for example in a frame, and is detachably connectable to the vehicle, for example demountably to the chassis using a nut and bolt. Preferably a motor 260A and inverter 280 is provided to power the air compression apparatus, and optionally a further motor 260B and inverter is provided to power the power steering apparatus 220. A sensor for detecting motor or compressor oil temperature, hydraulic fluid temperature or hydraulic fluid level may also be provided. Alterative ancillary systems comprising either, but not both of, the air compression apparatus and power steering apparatus are provided, in either case with a motor and inverter.
