An electronic mirror (e-mirror) system (300) is disclosed herein. The system (300) includes a backlit display (310) configured to present content; a first reflective polariser (220) overlapping the backlit display (310); an air gap layer (710) introduced between the backlit display (310) and the first reflective polariser (220); a rotator cell layer (230) directly overlapping the first reflective polariser (220); a second reflective polariser (240) directly overlapping the rotator cell (230); a switchable polariser (250) directly overlapping the second reflective polariser (240); and a lens (260) directly overlapping the switchable polariser (250). Also included herein is an index-matched interface (810) and front antireflective film (720), thereby allowing the e-mirror (300) to be in either a reflective mode or an electronic display mode without requiring a toggling towards a low-luminance surface.
