The present disclosure relates to a brake assembly having: a) a motor; b) a reduction gear system; c) a motor brake having: (i) a toothed wheel; (ii) an electromagnet; (iii) a pawl; (iv) a biasing means; d) a rotary to linear actuator in communication with the reduction gear system that drives one or more brake pads; wherein the pawl is monostable, so that the pawl is engaged with the toothed wheel when the motor brake is in an engaged position to prevent rotation of the toothed wheel and the motor when the electromagnet is not energized, and when the motor brake is in a disengaged position, the pawl moves away from the toothed wheel when the electromagnet is energized so the toothed wheel may rotate freely with the motor; and wherein the biasing means urges the pawl into engagement with the toothed wheel.
