The invention relates to a method and to a system for predicting and/or controlling ship traffic in the region of a sea area (40), in particular an international sea area, of limited cross-section, and to a use. According to the invention, a fixed measurement zone (10) is defined, which comprises a limited-cross-section part (42) of the sea area (40), wherein AIS data of sea vehicles (20) that cross the measurement zone (10) are captured over a first measurement time span and an empirical model of the ship traffic in the measurement zone (10) is created from the captured AIS data, wherein, after the empirical model has been created, a traffic prediction operation and/or traffic control operation is performed for currently occurring ship traffic, in which a temporal development of at least one input parameter of the ship traffic in the measurement zone (10) is first calculated, in particular extrapolated, on the basis of AIS data of sea vehicles (20) in the measurement zone (10) and/or of sea vehicles approaching the measurement zone (10), and then, from the empirical model, to which the at least one calculated input parameter of the ship traffic is supplied as an input variable, at least one future output parameter of the ship traffic in the measurement zone is extracted as a model response, wherein the model response is shared with a sea vehicle (20) or the operator thereof as a prediction of a future value of the output parameter.
