The invention relates to a method for assisting with driving of a vehicle for following a target comprising: – detecting a driving-aid method input condition, – providing an acceleration setpoint dependent on running conditions, – calculating a vehicle speed setpoint (41, 43, 95), – calculating a wheel torque setpoint (50, 54, 56), – calculating a gearbox input torque setpoint (57) dependent on the gearbox ratio engaged and on the wheel torque setpoint, – setting the engine speed according to the gearbox input torque setpoint, – calculating a clutch torque setpoint dependent on the gearbox input torque setpoint and on the degree of clutch engagement, – setting the clutch engagement according to the clutch torque setpoint.
