The invention relates to a method for ascertaining a driving state of a hybrid vehicle for route segments of a driving route (29) lying ahead. The hybrid vehicle comprises an internal combustion engine (2), an electric machine (3), and an electric energy store (10) for supplying electric energy to the electric machine (3), and the method has the steps of obtaining driving route data (21) which represents the driving route (29) lying ahead, said driving route (29) which lies ahead being divided into multiple route segments (29a-e) and the driving route data (21) contains route information on the route segments (29a-e); and ascertaining (30) a suitability parameter (PE, PL) for a specified driving state of the hybrid vehicle for each driving segment (29a-e) on the basis of the route information for the respective route segment (29a-e). The specified driving state (I) comprises at least one purely electric driving state in which the electric machine (3) drives the hybrid vehicle and a second driving state (II, III) in which the internal combustion engine (2) drives the hybrid vehicle.
