A propulsion system (10) includes a gas turbine engine (12), an electric motor system having a motor drive (18, 20) electrically connected to an electric machine (14) and an electric motor (22, 24) electrically connected to the motor drive where the electric motor drives a propulsion unit, an electric machine (14) rotatably attached to the gas turbine engine (12) and electrically connected to the electric motor system, an energy storage system (28) having bi-directional electrical connections with the electric motor system and the electric machine, and an Rankine cycle system (30) in communication with the gas turbine engine (12) for recovering waste heat from the gas turbine engine (12).
