A wave energy conversion system is provided. The system comprises a buoyant apparatus (10), a tether (19), a pump (15) associated with a hydraulic circuit and a mooring (16) located on the seabed. The buoyant apparatus (10) comprises a hollow body (21) presenting an exterior surface (27). The hollow body (21) is adapted to be continuously located below a water surface during operation. The buoyant apparatus (10) is operably connected to the mooring (16), characterised in that the operable connection comprises a relief arrangement for relieving excessive loadings between the buoyant apparatus (10) and the mooring (16) as a result of wave motion.
