There is described an unmanned aerial vehicle system comprising a first multi-rotor carrier aircraft and a carried aircraft, wherein the first carrier aircraft comprises: an airframe; a plurality of rotors carried by the airframe, the plurality of rotors being positioned to support the first carrier aircraft in hover; a battery carried by the airframe and operatively coupled to the rotors to power the rotors; a launch fixture positioned to releasably attach to the carried aircraft, the carried aircraft having a capture device, wherein the launch fixture includes a pivoting portion positioned to be engaged with the carried aircraft, and a plunger movable relative to the airframe and positioned to pivot the carried aircraft relative to the airframe; and a capture line carried by the first carrier aircraft and deployable to hang from the first carrier aircraft, the capture line being sized to releasably engage with the capture device of the carried aircraft.
