The invention relates to a method and to a system (10) for determining a characteristic value K of a catching device (26) of a cable elevator (100). In order to perform the method: in a first step (S1), a catching force F Fang of the catching device (26) is determined for a nominal speed v nenn of a downward run of an unloaded elevator cab (18) having an empty weight m FK, wherein a braking deceleration a Fang_leer > 1g must be achieved; in a second step (S2), a test speed v test > v nenn, at which test speed a test load of the catching (26) and of the cable elevator (100) that can be predetermined occurs, is determined in dependence on the catching force F Fang; in a third step (S3), a test run is performed at the determined test speed v test, wherein the elevator cab (18) having the empty weight m FK is unloaded, wherein a relative position change ∆s of the elevator cab (18) in relation to the counterweight (16) is recorded; in a fourth step (S4), an evaluation is performed in order to determine whether the recorded relative position change ∆s satisfies an achievement of the predetermined test load of the cable elevator (100), and the desired characteristic value K is determined. The proposed measuring device comprises at least an elevator-cab distance measuring device (30) and a second counterweight distance measuring device (52) and/or a counterweight acceleration sensor (32), a relative-position sensing device (52), and an analyzing device (54) for determining the characteristic value K.
