The invention relates to a method and system (1) for safely and remotely starting a vehicle, wherein the method comprises the following steps: activating (11) the start of the vehicle engine (10); detecting (16) an event, including the determination (12) of torque variations (Vc) over an analysis time interval (T), from control signals relating to engine torque request instructions from a module (5) for controlling the slowdown of an engine; comparing (13) the determined torque variation (Vc) to a torque threshold value (Vs); and triggering (14) the engine cutoff (10) when the determined torque variation (Vc) is no lower than the torque threshold value (Vs).
