Misalignment of a rotary shaft (20a) in a radial direction is detected based on the signals of magnetic sensors (Ss1, Sc1, Ss2, Sc2) that are arranged so as to oppose a magnet part (210) provided to rotate integrally with the shaft and magnetized so that a position of an area magnetized as an N pole and a position of an area magnetized as an S pole are alternately switched as the rotary shaft (20a) rotates. Shaft misalignment is detected either based on the difference between two rotation angle values determined based on two respective pairs (Ss1 and Sc1; Ss2 and Sc2) of magnetic sensors, each sensor pair being shifted from one another by À/2, or based on a misalignment amount calculated from two inclination angle values determined on the basis of two respective pairs (Ss1 and Ss2; Sc1 and Sc2) of magnetic sensors, each sensor pair being shifted from one another by À. When the angular difference or the misalignment amount is larger than a threshold, the occurrence of shaft misalignment is detected and a corresponding information (F) is output.
